On November 20th, Universal Energy won the bidding of 100MW solar power project in Azerbaijan. The company has been successfully developing into a new market in Azerbaijan after its success in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, which is another important practice for Wontai to actively develop along the “Belt and Road”.

The auction was held during the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Azerbaijan, which is an important activity of the conference and the first time for the Azerbaijani government to carry out renewable energy project cooperation in the form of bidding. The bidding attracted eight global renewable energy leading companies to participate, and Universal Energy won the bid for the local 100MW solar power project by its competitiveness in terms of solution, price and technology.

Located in Gobustan of Azerbaijan, the project with the capacity of 100MW is expected to be connected to the grid in early 2026. By then, the annual power generation of this project will reach 180 million kWh, which is equivalent to reducing carbon emissions by about 146,520 tons per year, which is of positive significance for promoting the development of local green energy industry and environmental protection.

It is worth mentioning that in July this year, China and Azerbaijan established a strategic partnership and issued a statement on strategic cooperation, clearly proposing that the two countries would strengthen cooperation in renewable energy, energy storage and other fields. At this COP29, Azerbaijan, as the host country, has pledged to increase the proportion of renewable energy power generation to 30% by 2030. All these will provide a favorable policy environment for Chinese enterprises interested in developing green energy in Azerbaijan.
